Can I Get A Massage When Pregnant

Positions For A Pregnancy Massage

Salt Lake Prenatal Massage FAQ: How often should I go for massage during pregnancy?

Finding a comfortable position for a massage can be a challenge with a growing bump.

In the third trimester, its not recommended that you lie flat on your back for long periods. Thats because the weight of your uterus presses on your spine and major blood vessels. This can decrease blood flow to your baby . And, by the third trimester, youll probably have a sizeable bump so youre unlikely to be comfy on your front.

Sitting up, lying on your side or semi-reclining are good options. Some spas have a massage table with a hole cut out to accommodate your bump. More research is required on these as some people are concerned that they allow the abdomen to dangle unsupported. The worry is that gravity is pulling the baby, amniotic fluid and placenta down, and might cause strain on the uterine ligaments.

Cushions or wedges could help you get more comfy. You could also ask your therapist if you need help changing position.

There’s no evidence to say that soft, gentle massaging of your bump itself is harmful. But you might find that your tummy or your breasts feel more sensitive and so youd rather your therapist avoids these areas.

If you find any techniques particularly relaxing during your massage, make a mental note and show your partner. These massage techniques may come in handy for your partner to use during labour.

Improvement Of Nerve Pain

Sciatic nerve pain is experienced by many women in late pregnancy as the uterus rests on muscles of the pelvic floor and lower back. The pressure of the uterus spreads tension to the muscles of the upper and lower leg, causing them to swell and put pressure on nearby nerves.Massage therapy addresses the inflamed nerves by helping to release the tension on nearby muscles. Many women have experienced a significant reduction in sciatic nerve pain during pregnancy through massage.Other potential benefits of prenatal massage:

  • Improved oxygenation of soft tissues and muscles

Break through in understanding of First Trimester Massage

Common misconception and myths that pregnant women should not receive a massage in the first trimester have been addressed by the AAMT with its decision agreeing to first trimester massage but only if it is undertaken by a trained pregnancy massage practitioner. Pregnancy massage specialist and trainer Catherine McInerney welcomed the AAMT decision.

Pregnant women feel frustrated and disappointed when they are refused treatment because they are in the first trimester even when they feel very well and it may be their second or third pregnancy and they are looking forward to some mum time, Catherine said.

The statement no massage in first trimester is heard from therapists across Australia, and Im pleased that this will now only apply to massage therapists without specialised pregnancy massage training and skills.

Mums attend our clinic from as early as 5 to 6 weeks and are delighted that they can receive a massage treatment specially designed to support the changes through first trimester, Catherine said.Research undertaken by Catherine and presented to the AAMT board showed it was evident that the myths surrounding first trimester massage were invalid and Australian mums had been given the wrong message.

Massage therapists and Spa and Beauty Therapists are all taught not to massage in the first trimester.

Prenatal Massage With A Qualified Therapist Can Be A Relaxing Way To Release Some Of Your Back Pain During Pregnancy

Is it bad to get a massage while pregnant?

Getting a massage can mean different things — a blissful luxury, an acute stress management technique, an injury recovery strategy, or, in the case of pregnancy-related backaches, a self-care regimen directed at relieving pain. But is massage safe during pregnancy?

Some scientific studies have shown that massage therapy can do lots of things that pregnant women want and need: It can help with sleep and improve mood, reduce edema by increasing circulation and moving fluid in the body, and relieve nerve pain, including sciatic nerve pain, by relaxing the muscles that can clench and tighten around nerves and compress them.

Pregnant women who are interested in massage therapy should adopt a safety-first approach and see only therapists who have been trained and certified in prenatal massage techniques. The American Pregnancy Association maintains a list of recommended massage therapists, and your doctor might also have suggestions for qualified therapists in your area.

After 22 weeks, lying on your back should be avoided because it can put pressure on a deep blood vessel that is important for carrying blood and nutrients to your baby. If you have a high-risk pregnancy or high blood pressure, or you experience sudden swelling, speak to your doctor before scheduling any prenatal massage.

The History Of Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massages are not new. In fact, prenatal massage has a deep history rooted in many cultures around the world. Heres a look at how prenatal massage has traditionally been used:

  • Jamaica: Midwives in Jamaica traditionally used prenatal massage right until delivery. Depending on what stage of labor Mama was in, the midwives would preform different massage techniques. Toona leaves were often used to rub the belly, while olive oil and a warm wet compress was used on the belly during transition.
  • Japan: Fun fact: Midwives in Japan are called Sanba, which literally means elderly woman who massages. Japanese sanbas are known for performing acupressure during pregnancy, as well as foot and leg messages while mama labors.
  • Mexico: Aztec midwives massaged a mama-to-bes legs and believed that the tension in her legs indicated fetal position. This practice must have been handy when there were no ultrasounds!
  • Malaysia: Malaysian mothers massage their own navels with coconut oil. Why? It is believed to encourage the baby to lower into the proper position for birth.
  • England: Midwives in 17th century England massaged laboring moms with oil of lilies.

When Can You Get A Prenatal Massage

Good news: You can get a prenatal massage at any point in pregnancy, even early on, Field says. In fact, it may be particularly helpful in the first trimester if you have morning sickness. While there is no direct research that links massage to pregnancy-related nausea relief, a study found that a 20-minute massage significantly reduced nausea in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

That said, some facilities may choose not to offer prenatal massage for moms-to-be who are still in their first trimesternot because massage is riskier during this time, as the American Pregnancy Association explains, but simply because theyd like to avoid any liability issues should their client go on to experience a miscarriage, which is statistically more likely to happen during the first 12 weeks of any pregnancy.

The third trimester is especially great for prenatal massage. By then, your body has undergone a huge transformation, and youre likely to be both physically and mentally exhausted by the pregnancy. It even works as a preparation exercise for labor. Massage allows the pregnant client to practice breathing through physical intensity to release muscles, softening instead of holding against the pain, says Lyon. This is also the ideal reaction to contractions. There are very few things you can do to practice that kind of physical and mental surrender.

Possible Benefits Of Pregnancy Massage

Only a handful of small studies have focused on massage in pregnancy. No definite benefits have been established. But one study at the University of Miami School of Medicine suggests that massage therapy might have multiple positive effects, including:

  • Lowered anxiety

In another study of pregnancy massage in depressed women, researchers found:

  • Increased levels of the “feel-good” hormones serotonin and dopamine
  • An overall improvement in mood

Research has shown that, for the general population, massage has other potential benefits. It may relieve pain, or it may boost the immune systemâs ability to fight off viruses and tumors.

What Positions Are Safe In Postpartum Massage

Any position is safe after delivery, but may be adjusted for your comfort or specific treatment. Some moms crave being able to lie face-down again after lying on their sides for almost nine months. Others may be uncomfortable face-down because of breast discomfort or the distraction of leaking milk. The side-lying position can be comfortable and very effective to treat specific issues of the shoulders, pelvis or legs.

Safety Tips For Getting Massage When Pregnant

There are some other precautions to take when receiving a massage while pregnant. For instance, your massage therapist should look out for symptoms of blood clots or varicose veins. Some other precautions are as follows:

  • Make sure to tell your massage therapist that youre pregnant before the massage begins.
  • If the massage makes you nauseous, uncomfortable, or you dont enjoy it, ask to stop.
  • Avoid massage tables that have a hole cut out for your belly. The best way to receive a massage is on your side, supported by plenty of padding to ensure stability and comfort.
  • The massage should last no more than an hour.
  • A massage in the first trimester isnt recommended. Although there is little evidence that a massage can cause a miscarriage during this time, many massage therapists err on the side of caution and wont grant massages in the first trimester.
  • Make sure the massage oil you use is safe. Avoid peppermint, rosemary, sage, and thyme oil.
  • Avoid massage if you have a high-risk pregnancy or any of the following:
  • Sudden severe swelling or headaches
  • Have had a previous preterm birth

Pregnancy And Chair Massage: What You Need To Know

Can I Get A Chair Massage While Pregnant?

It is a common question that usually has the same simple answer: yes!

In most cases, getting any form of light-pressure massage while pregnant will produce only positive results. Studies indicate that massage therapy performed during pregnancy reduces anxiety, decreases symptoms of depression, relieves muscle aches and joint pains, and improves labor and newborn health.

Some special circumstances, like a high risk pregnancy, could make getting a massage while pregnant ill-advised, and, in general, if there are any adverse health conditions that have become associated with the pregnancy, it is generally a good idea to consult with a doctor before receiving any kind of bodywork.

In the event of a pregnancy without any special circumstances, though, massage is actually recommended all throughout the child-bearing months!

Women can begin massage therapy at any point in their pregnancy during the first, second or, technically, even the third trimester.

Many facilities will often refuse to offer massage to a pregnant woman who is in late stages of pregnancy, typically for liability reasons, which has created the public misconception that it might be unwise to get a late-term massage. This opinion opposes the facts, though, as chair massage is an acceptable practice at any point in the pregnancy process.
