Reviews may also highlight any negative aspects of a company that will help in evaluating it as a prospective employer.

Thank you to the people who made my experience awesome, and I ended there with the sweetest most amazing manager ever! The owners of the franchise were always willing to help where needed as well and were very kind.

The site I worked in was Oceanside NY. The owners lived in Florida and did not take care of the business. The one great manager we had they took advantage of and then demoted her to hire another manager who took zero interest in the business. Many therapist left and the few that did stick around were unhappy. I’m happy to hear that since I left new owners have taken over. I hope it got better for all the hard working therapists.

This employment has helped me to grow as a person and as a manager. The owners are great to work with as well as the other employees here. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

When I first started at ME they were undergoing new management. There was and still is a lot of organizing the company has to do and I help out a lot.

Owning A Massage Envy Franchise Is More Expensive Than Owning A Chiropractic Franchise Clinic With The Joint

One of the main reasons why The Joint Chiropractic is the fastest growing chiropractic franchise in the nation is because opening a new clinic is not only affordable, but the business model is turn-key, straightforward to implement and quick to scale.

The total estimate to begin operations on a new chiropractic franchise ranges from $211,400 to $331,700, and because The Joint Chiropractic requires a small footprint, a small number of employees, as well as limited overhead, The Joint is an efficient business with strongprofit potential.

In comparison, the costs to open a Massage Envy® franchise ranges from $434,823 to $1,030,500 depending on real estate, which makes owning a Massage Envy more expensive than owning a clinic with The Joint Chiropractic from the outset.

Chiropractic Care Is A Necessity Getting A Massage Is A Luxury

While the benefits of getting regular massages are well known, massage is commonly thought of as a luxury purchase, often associated with taking a spa day, or going on a relaxing vacation. In comparison, chiropractic care is a medical necessity. Patients who visit The Joint Chiropractic clinics rely on the treatment our chiropractors provide to help them heal from daily, ongoing and chronic back and neck pain.

The American Chiropractic Association reports that 31 million Americans experience low back pain at any given time, and with rising obesity, sedentary lifestyles and poor diets, the number of people who experience back pain is likely to rise. The ACA published a list of interesting facts about back pain, which speaks to the severity of the issue. Here are some of the highlights:

Also, its worth considering pairing the businesses rather than choosing one or the other. For Jeff McGinty, owner of seven franchise clinics with The Joint and former multi-unit Massage Envy® owner, the businesses are perfect complements to each other.

Personally, I enjoy the health and wellness space, Jeff says. Both Massage Envy® and The Joint are in the wellness sector. I love waking up and wondering how many lives were going to change today. Its not a question of if were going to change lives its a question of how many.

    Pros

Many exciting new changes over the last year with multiple new services added, much needed technology upgrades, and new revenue streams. It has been a year of explosive change and growth as related to services, policies, procedures, and technology that is anticipated to pay off.

    Cons

Just be careful to investigate who the franchise owner for the clinic is before you go to work for them. Most franchisees are excellent and are very invested in their clinics, while some have zero involvement with their clinics, have NO passion for the business, and no interest in the employees or their futures. These type of owners only care about the money we are making and how fast they can spend it. It is a real shame that this amazing brand allows franchise owners like this in the system. It is a disservice to the brand! The owner of our locations has visited the clinics 3 times in 4 years for 20 minute visits. Sends a pretty clear message to the staff that the owner does not care about them and does not even care to know who they are,

Strip Mall Spa: How Massage Envy Created

Message (#9) to Members of Massage Envy of the Desert from Holly Lassak, Franchise Owner 080620

This story appears in the June 28, 2015 issue of Forbes.

For years Rick Davis was a tech executive who helped raise millions of dollars in venture capital. Then he decided to try a different kind of investment. In 2004 he considered buying a fast-food franchise before choosing an alternative: the massage-and-facial franchise chain Massage Envy. In fast food, Davis reasoned, you never know how many customers will walk in the door, but Massage Envy sells one-year memberships for $59.99 to $79.99 a month, which means recurring revenue.

Today Davis owns five Massage Envy clinics in the Seattle area and says 70% of his revenue comes from those membership fees. “I’ve raised big money in Silicon Valley,” says Davis, 59, who went to high school with Steve Jobs and was employee No. 10 at Apple spinoff Claris, “but this is the most successful and fun business venture I’ve ever been in.”

In some ways Massage Envy’s biggest challenges now involve overcoming its own success: For one, it has gotten a lot harder to find qualified massage therapists–its growth has coincided with a decline in massage-school enrollments. More important, the chain is besieged by a slew of fresh competitors.

Massage Envy Spas has grown into the biggest massage franchise, but several competitors have major… expansion plans.

Why I Quit Being A Massage Therapist

The first five years of practice are the most difficult because youre not used to the physical demands, and many massage therapists quit due to burnout. Acclimating to the emotional demands are difficult as well. Clients come to you with frustrations and complaints, often times breaking down and crying in the room.

    Give Them What They Want

Massage Envy offers a full menu of massages to meet the needs of a wide range of clients. There is Trigger Point Therapy to alleviate pain with pressure and release. The popular Swedish massage is great for releasing tension and promoting relaxation. Athletes or weekend warriors can appreciate a sports massage that focuses on a specific area like that knee or shoulder or the full body stretch. Deep tissue massage reaches the deepest layer of muscles to release knots and tensions. And, thats just the massage there are also facials!

Massage Envy Owners Call For New Management As Profits Cut In Half

More than 100 arbitration actions have piled up against Massage Envy in the past year, from franchisees who claim an impending doubling of fees for the national ad fund, forced purchases of more expensive massage oils that benefit only the franchisor, and increased fees for apps and other technology that is atrocious, non-functional, as operator Scott Loev put it. Now the Envy Owners Association is going public with its biggest demand yeta call for new management.

On the board, frankly, we would love to see a change in leadership, said Jim Mellon, president of the Envy Owners Association and a Massage Envy franchisee in Kansas City. We dont believe the current team has what it takes to lead the organization. The actions theyre taking are definitely driving the brand down.

At a high level, Mellon offered this summary of the franchisees complaints. We are about a $1 billion operation, and five years ago we were at or knocking at the door of $1.5 billion, he said. In late 2015/early 2016, when he came into the system, the average location was at or approaching $1.3 million at 1,200 locations. Now, AUVs in the low $900,000 range, and it changes week by week, and no more than 1,100 locations. Massage Envy never had a location close until 2017, and now weve lost more than 75/80 locations.
