The site I worked in was Oceanside NY. The owners lived in Florida and did not take care of the business. The one great manager we had they took advantage of and then demoted her to hire another manager who took zero interest in the business. In fast food, Davis reasoned, you never know how many customers will walk in the door, but Massage Envy sells one-year memberships for $59.99 to $79.99 a month, which means recurring revenue.
Today Davis owns five Massage Envy clinics in the Seattle area and says 70% of his revenue comes from those membership fees. “I’ve raised big money in Silicon Valley,” says Davis, 59, who went to high school with Steve Jobs and was employee No. 10 at Apple spinoff Claris, “but this is the most successful and fun business venture I’ve ever been in.”

More than 100 arbitration actions have piled up against Massage Envy in the past year, from franchisees who claim an impending doubling of fees for the national ad fund, forced purchases of more expensive massage oils that benefit only the franchisor, and increased fees for apps and other technology that is atrocious, non-functional, as operator Scott Loev put it. Now the Envy Owners Association is going public with its biggest demand yeta call for new management.
On the board, frankly, we would love to see a change in leadership, said Jim Mellon, president of the Envy Owners Association and a Massage Envy franchisee in Kansas City. We dont believe the current team has what it takes to lead the organization. The actions theyre taking are definitely driving the brand down.
At a high level, Mellon offered this summary of the franchisees complaints. We are about a $1 billion operation, and five years ago we were at or knocking at the door of $1.5 billion, he said. In late 2015/early 2016, when he came into the system, the average location was at or approaching $1.3 million at 1,200 locations. Now, AUVs in the low $900,000 range, and it changes week by week, and no more than 1,100 locations. Massage Envy never had a location close until 2017, and now weve lost more than 75/80 locations.
