Massage therapy is forever a growing business but much like other businesses, it took a fall when the pandemic arrived. As we close the chapter of 2021 and approach the new year, we are also approaching the unknown. 2019 was the start of the coronavirus. 2020 was the year of quarantining. 2021 was the year of vaccines people have been losing their jobs due to not being vaccinated or leaving their jobs due to fear. Adapting to the new normal proves to be difficult needing to wear masks, social distancing, having to work remotely instead of in person. Not having that connection with other people. Losing income due to being out of work not being able to afford bills. The list can go on for miles.

Sounds overwhelming, right? Maybe, youd even say it sounds stressful?

The truth of the matter is the stress level in the United States is quickly escalating as time passes. However, there are ways to decrease that stress level, one person, at a time. Thats where you come in. A massage therapist in the making. Making us humans a little less stressed. In fact, more chiropractors, medical doctors, and physical therapists are recommending massage therapy to their patients.

The Problem With Not Having Clear Definitions

What happens and is already happening is that when the profession fails to clearly define the terms medical massage and/or clinical massage, others will define it for themselves. The insurance carriers in WA State are already doing that. Other professions can and will start to define things for us if the massage profession doesnt do it for themselves.

The CA Massage Therapy Council also just sent an email to their certificate holders saying that the CA Dept. of Public health has broadened their own definition of medical massage for COVID-19 regulations.

Essential workers: Other states allowed Medical Massage to be provided when other businesses giving massage for so called relaxation purposes were forced to close. The medical massage and medical necessity definitions were again lacking, making it confusing and also allowed many to continue to give massage.

Complete A Therapeutic Massage Program

If you have a high school diploma and an interest in massage, youre qualified to enter a Massage Therapy program. Typically, a diploma in Massage Therapy takes around 15 months and can be completed at a vocational or career training college.

At IBMC College, the Therapeutic Massage diploma program can be completed in as little as 10 months. Thats because the college is career-focused and doesnt require fluff classes that dont relate to Massage Therapy. Students can skip the extra courses in unrelated subjects required by many community colleges.

Your program of study should include courses like anatomy and physiology, therapeutic massage, and clinical massage applications. Be sure to ask your admissions representative what classes are required for graduation from the program.

What Is A Massage Therapist

Massage therapists help their clients recover from injuries, improve their posture and/or release tension. They do this by using their hands, arms and elbows to massage the muscles either in the specific area troubling the client or across the whole back, shoulders, arms and legs.

A massage session typically lasts anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour so excellent upper body strength and endurance are necessary for this career. It also requires training in the appropriate techniques and equipment to use during a massage session.

Most massage therapists will specialize in two or three methods such as sports massage, Swedish massage or deep-tissue massage. They will then adapt these to the unique needs of each client. For example, a young, physically active client would require a more vigorous deep-tissue or sports massage to treat muscles that are used extensively. On the other hand, an elderly client might require a gentler technique focused on specific pain points.

Massage therapists can also opt between working at an office where clients come to them or making house calls where the therapist brings a massage table to the client’s home and does the massage there. Either way, it’s important for massage therapists to take a 15-30 minute break between sessions to allow their arms and hands some time to rest and recover. During these breaks, you should do some gentle stretches to prevent carpal tunnel or other injuries.

What Is The Difference Between A Certified Massage Therapist And A Licensed Massage Therapist

How Do I Become a Massage Continuing Education Teacher

A certified massage therapist and licensed massage therapist are essentially the same the main difference depends on the terminology a given state chooses to use. They both have successfully completed a certificate or degree program from an accredited massage therapy school and have successfully passed a state-sanctioned massage therapy exam.

Technically speaking, four states currently do not require massage therapy licensure: Wyoming, Vermont, Minnesota, and Kansas. Note, however, that there may still be licensing requirements at the county or municipal level.

Also, there is a growing push to require licensure in every state. In Minnesota, for example, state legislators recently introduced a bill requiring massage therapists to be licensed.
