Applicants With Criminal Convictions
If you have ever been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor or pleaded guilty or no-contest to any in-state, out-of-state or federal criminal offense, you must provide a completed Criminal History Questionnaire along with your application materials.
Criminal convictions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Licenses may be denied based on the nature of the conviction and how long prior to the application the conviction occurred. Depending on your criminal history, a review can take from one to six weeks to complete.
Individuals may request TDLR review their criminal background before actually applying for a license. TDLR uses the same process for this pre-application evaluation as the process described below. See the Criminal History Evaluation Letter page for more information.

Should You Make Conversation During The Massage
The only things you need to tell your bodyworker are:
- If their technique is hurting you.
- If you have any medical conditions or old injuries that give you chronic pain.
- If you need them to spend more time on any extra sore muscles.
Any conversation beyond that is entirely optional and up to you. Do whatever helps you relax and feel comfortable.

Massage therapists aren’t subject to any national regulations when it comes to running this type of business. There isn’t a national licensing or certification program that would allow a single massage therapist to practice anywhere within the United States.

Licensing Certification And Registration

The only states that do not currently require statewide regulation are Kansas, Minnesota, Vermont and Wyoming. However massage therapists who practice in these states will still have to comply with any local licensing laws and regulations.
The length of time that it takes to process a license application varies. It all depends on how much information the board has to collect and review, and how efficient and timely their data collection and review processes are. A common source of delay is an application that has not been completed correctly.
Applicants Licensed In Another Jurisdiction
If you are licensed in another state, country or territory based on specific education and examination requirements, and have practiced massage therapy in that state, country or territory for at least two years, you may be eligible for licensure by endorsement.
If you have been licensed and practiced 2 – 4 years in another state, country or territory, you must:
*One year of experience is defined as 52 weeks in which massage therapy is practiced an average of 12 hours each week.

Applicants for a massage license in Idaho are required to complete a minimum of 500 hours of in-class supervised coursework instruction and clinical work from an approved school. The program content must meet the following minimum hours:
- 200 hours in massage and bodywork assessment, theory and application
- 125 hours in body systems including anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology
- 40 hours in pathology
- 25 hours in business and ethics
- 110 hours of clinical work
