Apply For Business Licenses And Permits
In addition to attaining a states required massage certification or licensure, massage therapy business owners also need to acquire any general business licenses or permits that their states and towns require. A few common ones include a sales tax permit, Employer Identification Number, and Occupancy Permit, among others.
When You Start A Massage Practice Your Biggest Expense Is Rent
You can dream, and dream big, but you must start with honesty and a real budget. I want to discuss office rent, as it will be your biggest monthly cost.
Leasing space for your massage business can be a money-saving effort and the beginning of a great career or a debt trap that ends your ability to take care of your financial responsibilities. It all depends on what you find that matches that great budget you put together.
I have known people who signed a rental lease with the hope they could afford it, and typically only had enough money in reserve to pay for the first month or two. They believed it would all work out and they would have enough clients by the time their savings ran out and that didnt happen. This is a type of business failure you want to avoid.
My recommendation is instead of jumping in and hoping you will be successful, have a plan and a budget. Those numbers are what will tell you whether or not you are ready to enter into a lease. They are your reality, so that is where you must start. When you have built up clientele, you will have what you need to sign a lease.
If you charge $70 per massage session, you will need to perform the following number of massages to cover your rent:
Three massages a month to cover the low end of rent, at $200 per month seven massages a month to cover the mid-range of rent, at $500 per month and 12 massages a month to cover the high end of rent, at $800 per month.

Do I Need A Massage Establishment License To Offer Massage Therapy In My Chiropractic Office
By: Zach Simpson
A question that I am frequently asked is do I actually need a Massage Establishment License for my chiropractic practice? The answer is it depends on the employment status of licensed massage therapist, and whose patients the massage therapist is treating.
Chapter 480, Florida Statutes, regulates the practice of massage therapy in Florida. Pursuant to this law, the facility where massage therapy is administered must be licensed separately as a massage establishment license unless it is the residence or office of the client. Under the Chiropractic Medicine Act, a chiropractic physician prescribing massage therapy for his or her patients in the chiropractic physicians office does not need to have a massage establishment license. However, the office, does need a massage establishment license if the massage therapist is permitted to bring his or her own clients into the office for massage therapy.

Itemized Costs To Start A Massage Practice
Massage therapy is probably one of the least expensive businesses you can start. All you need is a quiet and manageable space with restroom facilities, a massage table, sheets and towels, music, lighting, lubricant, and a way for people to schedule with you.
Assuming you already have your professional or business licenses and insurance paid for, below is a general list of common massage business start-up costs.
The business expenses that Ive listed below are separated into two areas: start-up and monthly reoccurring costs. On the bright side, start-up costs are typically a one-time expense, and your ongoing costs are controllable based on the choices you make related to smart budgeting.
Also on the bright side, anything that is used in your business, for your business, is a tax expense. The money you spend, for example, on the laundry, lubricant, paper you used for a gift certificate, and rent are always tax deductible.

Channels To Avoid For Your Mobile Massage Business
Writing this guide, I have assumed that you are a massage therapist who wants to start a mobile massage business. I am assuming that your business will probably be a one-person show.
If thats the case, then there are few marketing channels that you should avoid, although every marketing consultant will tell you to give it a shot. In the next section, I will discuss two such channels.
SEO or search engine optimization is the process of ranking your website high on search engines so that people looking for your services find you easily.
For my business, SEO is the number 1 source of customers. So, why am I advising you to stay away from SEO? Well, the reason is simple competition.
If you decide to invest in SEO for your mobile massage business, you are competing with the mobile massage marketplaces directly! These marketplaces have millions in funding and pretty much dominate the front page of Google for search terms related to mobile massage.
Ranking your one-person mobile massage website on page 1 of Google is possible, but will require significant effort. My advice is to forget this channel for now and focus on the low-hanging fruits.
Again, similar to setting up a website, creating and distributing flyers is one of the top activities, I see massage therapists doing when they start a new business. Its like all massage therapists read the same out-dated books on how to start a mobile massage business.

Skills Experience And Education Useful In Running A Massage Therapy Business
A massage therapist doesnt need to have a business degree to start their own business, but certain skills and experiences will be beneficial.
Massage therapy education and certification. A quality massage therapy education is essential to working as a massage therapist. The Massage Therapy Education Guide states that states require that massage therapists complete between 330 and 1,000 hours of training before qualifying for certification. Students should expect to spend up to two years in massage therapy school and complete training requirements before theyll be able to work professionally.
Interpersonal skills. The ability to make customers feel welcome and relaxed is an important skill in the massage therapy industry. Massage therapists depend on repeat business, so establishing a positive relationship with clients can contribute to the therapists success.
Disciplined scheduling management. Massage therapists need to keep detailed, accurate schedules, especially if they travel to different locations.
. A massage therapy business owner will benefit from having some marketing talents. If a business owner can manage their social media accounts and establish a quality website, they can potentially bring in more business.
Getting Customers For Your Mobile Massage Business
Once you have the pre-requisites in place, the real hard work begins. Although mobile massage pays very well on a per hour basis, 42% of massage therapists say they would like to work more hours.
In my mobile massage business, I see a common scenario repeat itself. I will have a very successful mobile massage therapist, and they would decide to open a massage parlor of their own. Time and again, I have seen them struggle, and the key reason is their inability to attract and retain new customers.
There are two main ways for you to get customers for your mobile massage business:
In the next sections, I will explore how you can use both the ways of getting customers and establish a successful mobile massage business.

How To Start A Massage Therapy Business
Anyone with a desire to help people and an interest in the body and physical well-being may want to consider opening a massage therapy business. While this industry does require some specific schooling and certification or licensure, becoming a massage therapist doesnt take nearly as much time or monetary investment as it would take to become a chiropractor or other medical professional. Massage therapists who operate their own businesses enjoy scheduling flexibility and control of their own businesses and helping customers to recover from injuries or to reduce pain can be a rewarding experience.
