Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage: The Technique
One of the first things you will notice is that manual lymphatic drainage is not a typical massage. Instead, it is a complex process that should only be performed if you have completed a comprehensive program that includes both theory and hands-on training.
Although manual lymphatic massage may, at first, seem like a simple massaging technique, if it is performed improperly, it can cause serious side effects for individuals with certain medical conditions, including heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and cancer.
Manual lymphatic drainage consists of an extremely light, feathery pressure, with all movements performed in the direction of the lymphatic flow, toward the right lymphatic duct and the thoracic ductboth of which drain into the circulatory system at the right and left subclavian veins .
The massage technique of manual lymphatic drainage involves smooth, circular, pump-like strokes where lymph nodes likely exist. Most of the lymph nodes of the body are located in the face and neck. The massage technique is often described as a pumping and draining motion.

Diy Techniques To Try At Home
You might want to try doing your own three- to five-minute self-massage sequences daily. Lymphatic self-massage utilizes the same massage techniques as a practitioner would, but allows you to begin healing using your own two hands, Gainsley said. Akinnagbe agreed: You can achieve most of the benefits through self-massage.
Gainsley teachesan online master class in these techniques, and theyre outlined in greater detail in her book. Heres a quick example.
The Spock sequence calls for a finger separation between the middle and ring fingers, just like the Vulcan salute from Star Trek. Place your middle finger, index finger and thumb behind your ear and your ring and pinky fingers in front of your ears, Gainsley said. Gently massage in front of and then behind your ear at the same time. Aim toward the back of your head and down your neck, toward the lymphatic nodes at the base of your neck. This helps release the fluid that builds up around your ears. This stroke is very powerful for colds, ear congestion, sinus pressure and hangovers.

During this online course you will learn professional techniques to carry out a full body lymphatic drainage massage to improve the functioning of the lymphatic system enabling the body to remove toxins and excess fluid from the bodys tissue.
Lymphatic Drainage Massage is designed to improve the functioning of the lymphatic system and this is achieved by gentle, rhythmical movements of the skin to stimulate the contraction of the lymphatic vessels. By doing this more metabolic waste products and excess fluid can be removed from the bodys tissues and enter into the lymphatic system. Once it is in the lymphatic system the fluid, known as lymph, can travel through the system passing through a series of lymph nodes where it will be cleansed of dead cells, bacteria and other waste products. The clean lymph is then returned to the blood stream.

What Happens During Lymphatic Drainage Massage
First, it helps to know what lymph is and what it does. The lymph system plays a key role in the bodys immune system. Many lymphatic vessels, which contain lymphatic fluid that circulates through the body, lie right under the skin. There are lymph node clusters in the armpits, groin, neck and abdomen. Lymphatic fluid moves through our channels naturally when we exercise, but by encouraging that flow manually, we can speed the process, said Tammy Fender, esthetician and the owner of spas in West Palm Beach and Delray Beach, Florida.
When most people think of massage, theyre thinking of Swedish massage, which focuses more on muscles and blood vessels, said Femi Akinnagbe, resident physician, alternative medicine physiologist and massage therapist at the Harbor-UCLA Family Medicine Residency program. That type of massage can be very good for stimulating the cardiovascular system, but not as effective at stimulating the lymphatic and immune system. In my general opinion, Swedish massage can be better at improving mood, and lymphatic massage can be better at increasing energy levels.
Fender explained what to expect: Using a very light, rhythmic pumping technique, the practitioner concentrates on the layer between the skin and muscle. The practice may not be as intense as what youre used to. Its like seaweed undulating in the ocean, Gainsley said.

Advanced Training In Manual Lymphatic Drainage For Estheticians
An initial esthetician training program leading to state licensure does not include study and training in manual lymphatic drainage therefore, you will always need to seek additional training in this technique. However, many states do not allow estheticians to perform manual lymphatic drainage, regardless of their advanced training in this procedure. It is always important to check with your state regulatory agency before pursuing training in manual lymphatic drainage.
Currently, a handful of states, including Washington State, Utah, and Virginia, recognize a two-tier licensing system for estheticiansesthetician and master esthetician. Only master estheticians are allowed to perform manual lymphatic drainage in these states.
To earn a master esthetician state license in states with a two-tier licensing system, you must complete an advanced program beyond your initial esthetician programconsisting of about 600 hoursand take and pass the NIC National Advanced Esthetics written and practical exams.
In some states without a two-tier licensing system, such as New York, estheticians may perform manual lymphatic drainage upon the completion of an advanced course/program approved by their regulatory agency.
Training in manual lymphatic drainage encompasses about 120 hours of instruction and covers topics such as:

Does Lymphatic Drainage Massage Really Work
More than 15 years ago, Julie Brown Price was treated for breast cancer, and 25 of her lymph nodes were removed during mastectomy surgery.
I was lucky not to experience post-treatment lymphedema, which is a blockage in the lymphatic system that can cause swelling and pain, the Eden Prairie, Minnesota, resident said. But on some intuitive level, I knew I needed to detox my body from chemotherapy and radiation treatments, so I started receiving regular manual lymphatic drainage , a massage technique that lightly stretches skin to encourage the flow of lymphatic fluid.
Price continues to receive the massages regularly, but shes also aware that many perfectly healthy people are flocking to make appointments with certified lymphedema therapists. News stories, Instagram reels and TikTok all have examples of the latest celebrities who are seeking out these specialized massages, including supermodel Elle Macpherson and actress Selena Gomez. Theyre loyal clients for renowned masseurs like Flávia Lanini and Camila Perez.
When asked how she feels about A-listers queuing up for a treatment that has been helpful for those recovering from cancer treatment, Price is sanguine: Im OK with that, since I think we can all benefit from having our plumbing cleaned out occasionally, she said.
