Reiki Self Treatment Protocol
Ive practiced daily Reiki self-treatment since I first learned to practice in 1986. To offer myself a full Reiki self-treatment, I place my hands on these areas of my body, in this order:
- Crown of head
- Navel
- Lower abdomen.
I lie on my side with the pillow under my head doubled over for the first three placements, finding it more comfortable when my head is slightly elevated, and roll onto my back for the rest.
What Is A Reiki Session Like
A typical Reiki session involves an hour of meditative relaxation. All you need to do is close your eyes and surrender to the experience. Some fall asleep during sessions, and thats okay. Your practitioner may play soothing music as she works with your energy. Some practitioners place their hands on the body, while others hold them just above.
Some Reiki practitioners also may focus on your chakras, to make sure the energy there is flowing. They may use a crystal pendulum, holding it over each chakra to check for movement. You likely wont feel anything during this stage of the process.
Once your Reiki practitioner begins work, you may feel warmth from her hands or energy. You may even feel tingling, or an ache as something releases. Sometimes you wont feel anything at all.
Reiki can be done long distance, too. These sessions can be done over the phone, and the practitioner sends healing to you. How you receive the energy depends on you. Often the practitioner will ask questions at the end of the session, and you can then verify any sensations you were feeling. For example, your practitioner may share she sensed a block around your root chakra , and you can confirm whether or not you felt anything in that area.

You can find a Reiki practitioner virtually anywhere, whether at a massage clinic, your local yoga studio or through a simple online search. Visit the International Association of Reiki Professionals iarp.org to locate someone in your area.
There are four levels of training to complete before becoming a Reiki Master. However, those whove been certified through Level 2 are qualified to practice.

More than 800 hospitals in the United States currently offer Reiki services for patients.
In the U.K, some medical providers, such as hospices, may have volunteers who provide it free of charge as part of palliative care.

Anyone seeking a qualified, professional Reiki practitioner should be cautious, as few regulations govern this field. It can help to ask a practitioner about their training and experience.

Should We Take Reiki Seriously
The topic of Reiki can be approached with a fist or with a light touch. What Is Reiki For Dogs
Reikis an ancient Japanese healing practice.
It involves the channeling of a natural healing energy from its divine source into a subject.
Its believed the divine energy enters the Reiki practitioner through the crown chakra. This chakra is located on the top of the head.
It then flows through the practitioner and out through the palms of the hands.
There are several dog chakra points, including the
- Crown
- Sacral

The practitioner doesnt contribute or generate any energy on her own. Instead, she acts as a vessel through which Reiki can flow to its designated target.

Visualizing The Energy Enter Your Palms
The reason visualization is such a powerful way to connect with energy is because it helps you focus your willand since Universal Energy exists beyond the physical level of reality, you need to use your will to work with it.
While there are any number of visualizations you could use to connect with Reiki Energy, I like to use one I call the Infinite Light visualization.
Heres how it goes
- Close your eyes and take a deep breath in.
- As you exhale, visualize beams of bluish-white energy surrounding you, stemming like threads from the ground and up through the skies.
- Feel yourself bathing in the energy from this infinite field of light all around you.
- Inhale deeply, and as you exhale concentrate on your palms, focusing your will on calling the energetic light around you into them.
- Visualize the light entering your body and flowing through it into your palms, causing them to glow with cool white energy.
- Feel your palms radiating Universal Energy.
The key here is not about getting all the details right about what the energy looks like.
Some people can see Universal Energy, and others cannot. For those that havent learned how yet, you should visualize how you feel or sense it appears using your intuition.
The key is that by visualizing the connection taking place, you are focusing your will on making that connection happen and as with all energy work, your thoughts and willpower are what cause reality to take shape.

Will I Be Lying Down On A Massage Table Or Sitting
Reiki is usually performed on a client who is fully reclined comfortably on a massage table. It also may be performed on a client who is semi-reclined on a massage chair or recliner. If you have mobility or pain issues please communicate these to your Practitioner so they may make you your most comfortable for the session.
Is There An Intake Process
Some practitioners have intake forms and/or conduct a health interview, especially if the practitioner has other training in healthcare or manual therapies, such as massage. However, since Reiki has developed as a folk practice rather than a healthcare intervention, many Reiki practitioners deliberately avoid the type of intake that is common in healthcare. You may be asked to sign a consent form.
The practitioner will explain the process, and ask if you have any specific needs. Be sure to let the practitioner know if you have a health condition that might impact your lying flat on your back or front or if you have any areas that are sensitive to touch. In a hospital or other healthcare environment, the practitioner may ask for permission to touch.

How Long Does Reiki Take To Work
Because reiki is connected to the universal energy in all things, it flows instantaneously.
As soon as you have the thought and intention to send reiki, it begins to flow.
However, the longer you send reiki, the more effective it will be.
If you send healing energy for only a few seconds, a small amount of energy will be sent.
If you send healing energy for an hour, a larger amount of energy is sent and received.
Also, your intention effects the rate at which reiki energy flows.
If you use a lot of powerful emotions and positive energy when you send reiki, a short amount of time sending reiki goes a long way.
In essence, reiki works immediately.
To make your reiki transmission more powerful, use more positive emotion and send energy for a longer period of time.
For Anxiety And Pain Control
In 2014, a literature review looked at whether reiki could help with pain and anxiety. The authors reviewed information from various studies that had used reiki on people with cancer and people without cancer.
Some of the people had recently had surgery so they wanted to see if reiki could help with pain after surgery. Others were about to have a breast biopsy and were feeling anxious. They found that after reiki, women having a breast biopsy had a reduction in their anxiety and patients who had recently had surgery reported a decrease in their pain.
Although there were only a small number of studies , the authors concluded that reiki may be helpful for pain and anxiety. They recommended that more studies should be done in the future with larger numbers of people.

What Does Science Say About Reiki
Rand said no solid evidence for Reikis effectiveness yet exists, though practitioners and clients often cite anecdotal evidence to back up Reikis various benefits.
In terms of the energy itself, it seems to beyond scientific measurement, Rand said, but the results can be measured, and theres extensive research on that.
He described one study in which 45 participants with health issues were divided into three groups: the first received no intervention the second received what he called sham Reiki, in which a person posing as a Reiki practitioner went through the motions of providing Reiki and the third received authentic Reiki from a trained practitioner.
During the study, standard care and sham Reiki had some effect, but it was very marginal, Rand said. In the Reiki group, the subjects experienced significant decreases in heart rate and diastolic blood pressure, according to the studys abstract.
Write-ups of this study, along with a number of others, are available to read on Rands research website. While research into this modality is challenging for many reasons, Rand recognizes the importance of achieving scientific validation of Reikis benefits through formal research.

How Many Sessions Should I Receive
Your practitioner may suggest a series of sessions. Four sessions is a traditional recommendation and gives you time to evaluate what benefits you are receiving. Discuss with your practitioner how best to space the sessions to suit your needs and your schedule.In the presence of a serious health challenge, Reiki practitioners often recommend four sessions over four days. These need not be given by the same practitioner.
