Before embarking on my weeklong facial massage intensive, Id saved a few Instagram Reels and referenced them the morning after one too many tequilas, but Id never imagined the amount of educators dedicated to the craft. Learning more about where I carry tension and how to soften those areas felt empowering and like the ultimate self-care. Stimulating my skin, bringing oxygen to the surface, and all of that was great, but it was the time spent off-screen, all to myself, that really felt divine.

Some facial massage practitioners claim that massage may help reduce the signs of aging, either immediately or over time, with regular treatments. There is some evidence to support this claim, but it is weak.

For example, a 2018 study assessed the effects of massage rollers on the skin over 5 weeks. Researchers performed massage on the right cheek of 12 study participants. At the end of 5 weeks, there was greater vasodilation a measure of blood flow in only the right cheek.

This suggests that massage might help improve circulation. This could, in theory, promote the delivery of healthy nutrients to the skin, improve skin plumpness, or promote skin healing. However, the study was very small, so more research is necessary to confirm this.

A 2021 pilot study suggests that facial massage might offer the appearance of lifting in the cheeks. Drawing on CT scans of a cadaver and six volunteers, researchers concluded that massage could help improve facial mobility, potentially making the skin look younger or more lifted.

A 2022 study by some of the same authors used a similar CT scanning technique in five volunteers, who massaged their cheeks for 2 weeks. Researchers found that massage thinned the skin, helped lift the skin, and subjectively improved the skins appearance. Again, though, this was a very small study.

Ive dabbled in facial massage here and there. I once even tried a face workout at a spot called Face Gym, where a specialist treats your complexion to an invigorating massage that tones the muscles in your face and feels incredible. And, while I love my gua sha tools, its been a long time since I was last consistent with massaging my complexion.

Press with gentle to medium pressure since pressing too hard, especially over the areas with thinner, more delicate skin, may result in broken capillaries or worsen existing ones.

It can sometimes feel good to really apply more pressure if, say, you have a headache you want to relieve, but you dont want to do permanent damage. Trust me Ive tried to relieve more than a few headaches with facial massage and have not been as gentle as I should have.

Directions:

  • Using the tips of two or three fingers , sweep from the center of your chin, up and out along your jawline. You can also use your knuckles. Do at least 5 to 15 strokes on each side before moving up to the next area. Use both hands to do both sides of your face at once, if you wish.
  • Move up and repeat the motion from the corners of your mouth out toward your ears, then from the sides of your nose to your ears, and from your nose to your temples, using broad strokes.
  • Continue up, sweeping across your cheeks, then just under and above your eyebrows, and from between your eyes up to the top of your forehead.

    P.S. Its always better to use too much oil than not enough. If you end up with a lot of excess oil, spread it over other spots, like your neck, chest, and even elbows!
