JB: Massage has been operating for more than 3,000 years but in modern times, in Florida for example, licenses werent required until about the 1980s for massage therapy. There werent requirements for personal trainers to be certified until the early 2000s.

For the most part, in both industries, governments wanted a better-quality individual better quality in terms of training so they came into having some oversight around the same.

Its all about protecting the public. Many gyms wont hire trainers that dont have a certification. Were seeing more government intervention where the government is requiring certification.

As a fitness professional, you are charged with assessing a clients readiness and ability to participate safely in an exercise program. You are also responsible for designing, implementing, monitoring and progressing a client-centered fitness plan that aligns with each clients goals. Unless you have a license to practice massage, its best to offer an alternative should a client request bodywork from you.

Heres what you can do instead:

  • Explain the scope of your practice and what your certification and training legally allow you to do.
  • Teach clients self-myofascial release techniques using foam rollers and other self-massage tools.
  • Refer the client to a licensed massage therapist in your professional network.
  • Perform PNF stretching with clients to alleviate areas of tightness and improve flexibility. This is best done at the end of a workout during the cool-down.
  • Integrate and prioritize mobility, flexibility and recovery in your program design.

If you are interested in becoming a massage therapist as an adjunct to your fitness certification, be sure to research educational opportunities in your area, but do not practice massage therapy on clients even if they think it wont become an issue. It most likely eventually will.

What Is Massage Therapy

Massage is a therapeutic science focused on the safe manipulation of the soft tissues of the body . Through their training, massage therapists develop a robust and sophisticated knowledge of human anatomy and kinesiology.

A typical educational pathway to becoming a massage therapist involves coursework in anatomy, physiology, human biology, introduction to massage, palpation, business ethics, massage and special populations, reflexology, relaxation/stress management, various assessment classes, and clinical practice. Many massage therapy curriculums also include elements of aromatherapy and nutrition.

Moon Therapeutic Massage Module

Moon introduces students to the strokes and hands-on skills that are used throughout massage therapy. We will teach them communication skills to use in practice when they graduate. Students will learn the effects of massage, as well as the indications and contraindications for massage as it relates to the upper extremities. They will review the foundational strokes of effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, shaking, rocking, friction, compression, and range-of-motion techniques. In order to reduce mechanical stress and potential of injury, students will continue to study the fundamentals of body mechanics and correct wrist and hand alignment, as well as self-care and stretching exercises. The module also will teach the treatment planning of client intake, assessment, and documentation as it relates to medical massage. Students will practice foundational massage strokes and build on fundamentals of medical massage strokes which will be applied to the shoulder, arm and hand. Students will learn to perform a one-hour full body relaxation massage incorporating all strokes and Medical techniques learned.
