Appreciate The Beauty Of The Carmel Mission
A short drive away from the center of Carmel-by-the-Sea lies Mission San Carlos Borroméo del Río Carmelo, better known as the Carmel Mission. One of 21 California missions, this is a peaceful retreat at which to stop and smell the flowers and learn a bit of state history. An active parish and school, my husband and I visited the Carmel Mission on a Sunday and we were treated to bells ringing, ringing, ringing to call church-goers to worship.

The Refuge Spa approaches the art of health and relaxation from a Scandinavian mind set that includes individual and couple massage and alternating hot and cool water immersion for total relaxation, and it may well be the answer for that overworked and stressed lifestyle most of us live.
Staff will explain about the hydrotherapy cycles and the variety of choices.
If you follow the recommend cycle of Eucalyptus Steam Room, hot tub, ocean water and snow melt water, you will have an invigorating experience unlike anything else you might have experienced.
It takes a sense of adventure, but everyone I know says it’s exhilarating.
More specifically:
- Heat up for 10 minutes
- Cool down 10 second plunge into either the Pacific Ocean temp or Arctic snow melt … followed by

I had a 90 minute Thai stretching massage with Noel and it was absolutely wonderful. She found areas of tension that I was completely unaware of and really took her time to help deeply relax these. She was extremely present throughout the entire massage which helped me to be as well and stay connected to breathing to be able to relax more and more deeply. Thank you so much, Noel. I will definitely be back my next trip to Carmel.

My wife and I had a couples massage and it was exceptional. My wife had been having a lot of problems with her shoulder and Noel did a great job of working on her lats and identifying the problem muscles. She used the right pressure and the results were noticeable the day after. Mika did an awesome job on my back and it was a very good full body work up. The best massage I have ever had. Affordable, good music and a nice environment. We are from out of state, but we would make it part of our vacation plans if we make it back this way. Awesome experience.
The Refuge Spa A Little Tricky To Find
The Refuge is tucked away near the mountains and can be a little tricky to find:
Take Carmel Valley Road, go east two miles to Rancho San Carlos Road. Turn South to the right and go about eighth tenths of a mile to the Refuge on the left.
Go on a weekday when the spa is less crowded….and please observe the no talking signs because the rule here is silence.
Open ten to ten every day of the year. Don’t forget to enjoy the outdoor firepits as part of your relaxing experience.

Hike Point Lobos State Reserve
About 13 minutes from Carmel-by-the-Sea lies Point Lobos State Reserve. If wandering through the quaint downtown didnt mellow you out, Point Lobos should do the trick. This reserve smells of things growing and dying and sounds of waves crashing, birds singing, and seals and sea lions barking. It feels alive and reminds you that you are alive.

A fellow hiker we met on one of the reserves numerous trails told us Point Lobos reminded her of the movie Avatar. Indeed, this nature sanctuary does feel otherworldly with its orange colored moss, twisted trees, flower festooned boulders, and wealth of animals.

We spied sea lions lazing on a beach, hundreds of birds, and a rather outgoing mama doe and her fawn. Lucky visitors can often spy sea otters here too, but we were not among them. To get a better view of the areas animal residents, bring binoculars or give your car keys to the information center to borrow a pair.

I booked a couples massage with Tatiana this past weekend. I did it all online about a week or so ahead of time and she was very responsive. She also has the most reasonable pricing that I found in the Monterey area. Since we had a couples massage, we were in the same room, which was extremely relaxing, with a little fireplace and soothing lighting. The massage beds were very comfortable and high-tech I’ve had a lot of massages in my life, and never once have I been on a table that the therapist was able to move up/down and manipulate the curvature with a button. Tatiana’s massage therapy provided me much needed timely relief from an annoying achy back pain that was bothering me for weeks! The spa is located in the beautiful Barnyard in Carmel by the Sea and is very serene with three treatment rooms. I’ve received treatment from Tatiana and Saudi and both of them are excellent!
