Oregon Massage Therapy Continuing Education Requirements

TEMPORARY CE CHANGES DUE TO COVID-19

Massage therapy continuing education requirements for license renewal vary from state to state and the laws are constantly changing. It is our current understanding that as of July 12, 2021 Oregon requires massage therapists to complete only 12 CE hours for license renewal applications received in the Board office between June 30, 2021 to July 1, 2022.

Of the 12 hours, you are required to complete 1 hour in Cultural Competency, and the 1 hour online Pain Management Module course provided by the Oregon Pain Management Commission.

Your Current Basic Life Support certification at the time of renewal remains a requirement and the hours spent obtaining your certification may be counted towards your total 12 CE hours.

SUSPENDED: The 4 hour ethics, boundaries and communication requirement is suspended for renewals received between June 30, 2021 and July 1, 2022.

For renewal applications received after July 1, 2022 as well as applications that were submitted before this day but not completed by July 1, 2022, you will be required to complete the 25 CE hours typically required including a minimum of 15 contact hour as well as all of the other course requirements including ethics.

Diversity in continuing education for massage therapists is one of the issues AIM will address right now Donnelly, Irizarry and other therapists involved have been individually urging continuing education event sponsors to move toward more diversity.

The group is backing up their requests for diversity with actionby choosing not to pay money to participate in conferences that dont showcase diversity, instead directing their support to the events that do and promote them within the group and to other networks of massage therapists.

They make a point to uplift the places and organizations and fields where we see them doing it right, Irizarry said.

Irizarry also noted that educators of color may face implicit bias, even in an organization that is trying to combat bias.

These educators who are trying to gain a foothold, reach a wider audience, they are faced with an industry that likes to see itself reflected Look at how we advertise massage therapy look at how its depicted in magazines and in our media look at how a spa advertises or sports massage is advertised or promoted, she said.

And some of this is a business of you cant be what you cant see. Some of it is also that as people are trying to break through that wall, theyre faced with the unconscious bias of the people who are doing the hiring, she continued.

The national conversation about culture, race and gender that has dominated our media and attention of latefrom Black Lives Matter to a proposed wall between the U.S. and Mexico, to Bruce becoming Caitlyn and some politicians calling for Muslim refuges to be blocked from the U.S.has highlighted the perceived differences between us, spotlighted the real challenges and discrimination many citizens face, and led some people to call for greater understanding of races and cultures outside each of our own.

As health care providers, called to offer care and nurturance to clients of all genders, cultures and nationalities, massage therapists might consider themselves immune to biases. Yet, we all have biases, according to psychologists including Samantha C. Sweeney, Ph.D., who specializes in multiculturalism in her Washington, D.C., practice, Family Psychological Services of Capitol Hill. Everyone does, she saidincluding health care practitioners.

If you have biases or judgments, they happen so automatically in the brain that you dont realize you have any type of reaction, because it feels natural and its what you have experienced your entire life, Sweeney said. Part of being a service provider is making sure you are treating your clients with the utmost care and equityand thats really difficult to do if you have these biases.

Cultural Competence In Massage Leadership

The group remains committed to promoting the voices of people who may have been boxed out of leadership roles in the massage industry and in continuing education. Two Massage Therapists Are At The Forefront Of A Movement In Massage To Increase Cultural Competence By Identifying Biases

As a massage therapist, you may work with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, and with the U.S. in a state of racial unrest, it is a very appropriate time to become conscious of and address your own biases.

The grassroots effort of Meg Donnelly, LMT, and Sakinah Irizarry, LMT, is called the Anti-Racism Initiative in Massage Alliance.

The idea for cultural competence outreach began with Donnelly, who on #BlackoutTuesday, an anti-racism initiative that took place June 2, investigated several resources for cultural competence training and wrote about them in a blog post on her website.

As a white woman Blackout Tuesday by just pausing my business for the day. I felt like it gave me time to sit back, reflect and figure out the work that I really needed to do, Donnelly told MASSAGE Magazine. In doing that, I put together a list of resources.

She then created a June 3 blog post, which was picked up and shared among some online massage therapist groups. Among the resources listed in her post are Healwells Unconscious Bias course, Psychology Todays article, How Well-Meaning Therapists Commit Racism, a The Thinking Practitioner podcast episode featuring massage therapy educator Benny Vaughn discussing the Black Lives Matter movement, and many others.
