Mblex Practice Tests: Everything You Need To Know

Amongst the allied health professions, massage therapy and bodywork is quite possibly the most rewarding. While it can admittedly be physically demanding, theres no question that its a highly satisfying occupation. As a massage therapist, you encounter a wide range of patients, each of whom brings their own particular set of issues along with them. Your job is to assess their current state, and put together an effective treatment plan based on their condition. While the work can be challenging at times, all it takes is a client getting up from the table, smiling, and thanking you for helping them feel better to remind you why you got into this line of work.

Of course, before you can experience the joys and challenges of running a full-time massage therapy and bodywork practice, you have to become a licensed practitioner. While you were in school, you devoted the vast majority of your time and energy to learning the ins and outs of massage. You read extensively, sat through hundreds of hours of lectures, and put your newfound knowledge to use in a clinical setting. After graduating from a full-time massage program, you might feel like youre ready to dive into the profession in its entirety. After all, youve been through school, and youre ready to get to work. In the vast majority of states, though, youll need to demonstrate that youve attained mastery of the concepts presented in massage school before youre legally permitted to practice bodywork on paying clients.

Why Include Practice Tests In Your Mblex Study Plan

Practice tests are one of the best ways to improve recall and prepare for an exam. Reading from textbooks is important to learn the concepts initially. But research shows that reading the same material over and over again is NOT the best way to increase recall and improve performance on tests.

Using practice tests frequently is a much better strategy to increase your recall of the material. This is called the testing effect. Repeated testing with review and feedback is a form of active learning that makes your memory stronger and makes it easier to retrieve the information you learn.

Repeated testing is an effective strategy for learning and retaining information about human anatomy.

Repeated studying after learning had no effect on delayed recall, but repeated testing produced a large positive effect.

Karpicke, J.D., Roediger, H.L. . The Critical Importance of Retrieval for Learning. Science, Vol. 319, pp.966-968.

Immediate testing after reading a prose passage promoted better long-term retention than repeatedly studying the passage.

    The Important Of Practice Tests

The MBLEx exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions in total, divided roughly equally between the above subject areas. Youll be given 2 hours to answer these questions using a computer interface.

As you can imagine, this kind of testing will feel somewhat different from the tests you took in massage school. Theres no tactile component, and youre not taking the test with pen or pencil. Youll be using a computer the entire time, and all of the questions will be identically formatted.

Dont fret, though: this is actually a good thing. Because the format of the MBLEx is fixed, you can prepare for it in a predetermined way.

Without a doubt, the best way to prepare for the exam is by taking as many MBLEx practice tests as possible. Studies have demonstrated that practice tests are a highly effective means of preparing for the real thing. In fact, theyre much more effective than simply reviewing the material to be tested.

    • The culture and history of massage therapy and bodywork methodology
    • How to assess clients, formulate treatment plans, and reassess clients based on response to treatment
