Deep Tissue Massage For Hip Pain

What About Trigger Points Knots And Pressure Points For Hip Pain

ASMR MASSAGE DEEP TISSUE ON HIP PAIN (WITH ANATOMY)

One of the main justifications for massage therapy or SMR is to release trigger points in the muscle. These are sometimes called pressure points or knots. For the purposes of this section, Ill use these terms interchangeably.

Lets discuss massage therapy from a professional and SMR separately. This is because they each come with their own factors to consider.

Points To Remember During Deep Tissue Massage For Hip Pain:

  • Identify the specific points or the trigger points which are the painful knots on the hip joint.
  • To do this, you should lie down in a supine position keeping your back straight.
  • Using one finger, gently apply pressure on the areas surrounding the hip joint.
  • Try to distinguish the trigger points. Once they are identified, using your finger tips, gently massage these points. Avoid putting excessive pressure. Start with mild or gentle pressure and slowly increase the pressure as far as bearable.
  • The trigger points should be massaged slowly in single directional strokes.
  • Slowly increase the massage frequency and its duration.

Helping The Hip Flexors

Hip flexors can also be addressed as a treatment for hip pain because strain injuries of hip flexor tendons, more specifically termed the common iliopsoas tendon, can contribute to hip pain and dysfunction.

The iliopsoas refers to the union of the iliacus muscle and the psoas major muscle just behind the inguinal ligament. Massage efforts to ease tension and expedite healing of hip flexor strains can restore hip mobility and lessen pain.

Aiding chronic tightness of the hip flexors is require for the average person who sits for long periods of time. Sitting shortens the overall hip flexor muscles including psoas major, iliacus, rectus femoris, and sartorius, and long-term shortening of the hip flexors can cause ongoing tightness and dramatically impact you gait and posture.

Tightness + Compensatory Issues

Its common for one side of our body to be slightly weaker than the other, which can contribute to weakness in our smaller stabilizer muscles working at the base of fine motor movements. When an instability develops, theres usually a compensatory issue, where larger muscles work harder to take up the slack. Over time, pain referrals, restriction, tightness and inflammation are signs adjustments need to be made to address the issue. Its always best to get ahead of the symptoms of tension and imbalances, before it turns into a more substantial issue.

Only Trained Medically Trained Therapists

It is not enough in case of annoying chronic back pain or hip pain so far, especially easy to knead especially tense areas of the back muscles and hope for the soothing effect. Exercise training is one of them a combination that only the healing hands of a trained medical masseur or physical therapist can offer, and a dose of self-initiative is also part of getting rid of the chronic low back pain.

How Massage Helps Tight Hips

Once the hip flexors become stiff, they often start shifting the overall alignment of the pelvis and low back. This leads to a self-perpetuating cycle of more stiffness and pain that can feel hard to shake without treatment interventions like massage and stretching. Massage can help break this cycle and help you feel your best in the long run, especially when it’s done consistently.

Massage Therapy Targeting Pressure Points For Hip Pain

Trigger point therapy is a hotly debated topic in the massage therapy industry. This is new. Up until recently, there seemed to be a consensus in the massage therapy industry. When muscles became overly stressed and were painful, they likely had pressure points. The massage therapist would apply pressure onto this point and voila! Pain vanished!

So what is the current controversy? Well for starters, the scientific support for trigger point therapy is shaky at best. Some studies find limited value while others dismiss it as complete pseudo science.

Lets bring back Paul Ingraham, creator of painscience.com and former massage therapist himself. In his article, Trigger Point Doubts, he provides a comprehensive analysis on the current view on trigger points.

Here are some highlights:

Ok so in english, what does all this tell us about hip pain? It tells us that its not advisable to have a massage therapist look for trigger points in your body. It also means there is limited evidence that massage therapy helps reduce or eliminate pain that is associated with trigger points.

But what if massage makes you feel good? It helps you relax and makes your pain feel better. Then get massages! An important point I want to bring home in this article is that massage therapy is not bad. My goal in this article is to help you analyze your intention behind getting those massages.

What Should I Do If I Experience Pain Or Discomfort During My Massage

First, you should know that feeling some levels of pain is good sign. This means that your therapist is breaking up those knots and realigning stiff muscles. However, if the pain becomes too intense or excruciating, you should always notify your massage therapist. Our therapists are trained to deal will all levels of pain sensitivity and will work to approach your particular situation using another technique or work to further prep your muscles.

Another thing to do during your massage during moments of discomfort is to do your very best to relax through it. Sometimes pain can cause us to tense our muscles up. By tensing your muscles, therapist will need to apply even more pressure in order to get everything working properly, thus causing a more uncomfortable experience.

This is why it is highly suggested to keep your muscles calm and relaxed throughout the entirety of the deep tissue massage. You may do so by frequently taking deep breaths and keeping your body loose.

  • Friction around knee cap: With the fingers and thumbs of both hands, make small taps and circles around the knee, pressing as hard as feels good.
  • Calf squeeze: Cupping your hands around the back of the calf, as close to the ankle as you can manage, squeeze as tightly as you can. Move slowly up the leg, stopping to squeeze several times.

Tight Hip Flexors: Is That A Sign Of Dysfunction

Theres little research that examines whether shortened or tight hip flexors cause or are associated with low back pain, yet many manual therapists and personal trainers seem to take this as a fact.

Google tight hip flexors and you would likely see that the first two pages consist mostly of citing hip flexors as a cause for low back pain, hip pain, and other types of pain.

While research in this specific topic is lacking, some evidence indicates a weak or no association between tight hip flexors and low back pain.

One major research on this was published in the Upsala Journal of Medical Sciences in 1988 where about 600 young men, who were enlisted in Swedish military service, were examined at the beginning and during the service over a four-year period.

Researcher Ann-Lisa Hellsing concluded that Tight hamstring or psoas muscles could not be shown to correlate to current back pain or to the incidence of back pain during the follow-up period.

She mentioned that having tight muscles could stem from other factors, such as genetics, heavy strength training, long-term pain, and poor movement patterns. The study also shows a lack of back pain relief from stretching tight psoas and hamstrings.

While there has been very little research since Hellsings work that examines this specific relationship, indirect evidence from postural studies also support her findings.

We might be able to provide some relief to patients with techniques that involve the application of pressure to these areas, but not because we are frictioning these deep structures,Jason Erickson said in a, who is a massage instructor in Eagan, Minnesota.

What Is Deep Tissue Massage Used For

Deep Tissue Massage can be used on any area of the body, but in this blog post I wanted to specifically look at hip pain as this is an area that I see people living with on a regular basis, within my practice. My aim as a therapist is to give the best possible massage I can, calling on a range of techniques from a variety of modalities, to give you a tailored experience that is going to help target your specific problem areas. But remember, just as Rome wasn’t built in a day, hip pain can be caused over time. This means it could take a few massages or even a series of massage – I never promise to ‘cure’ anything – I’m not a Doctor after all, but I always call on the most effective techniques I know in order to do my very best for you, because I’m passionate about helping people feel better in their own skin.

Why Might I Experience Some Pain During My Deep Tissue Massage

Ischiogluteal Bursitis

Because the deep tissue massage is used for stiffness, knots, chronic pain, contracted areas, and muscle tightness, your massage therapist will apply pressure and use deep strokes in order to get everything feeling back to normal again. Deep pressure is used to break apart your painful, stubborn knots. Knots can be described as a group of rigid tissue.

Your therapist will also use a friction technique by going against the grain of your muscles to assist in the realignment of tissue fibres. Another technique often used in the deep tissue massage is the stripping method. During this method, your masseuse will use deep pressure along your muscle fibres.

Our therapists often use their elbows, knuckles, hands, forearms and even feet during the massage. While the entire process isnt painful by itself, there are moments of discomfort and pain. These moments will most likely occur when your therapist is working on scar tissue, knots, or adhesions.

What Are The Benefits Of Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage offers both physical and psychological benefits. Unlike other massage techniques that focus on relaxation, deep tissue massage helps to treat muscle pain and improve stiffness. But it can still help to you unwind mentally, too.

People have also reported that deep tissue massage helps with:

  • sports injuries

Common Causes Of Hip Pain

Our hip is the largest ball-in-socket joint in our body, which allows for a wide range of fluid movements. While the hip bears a lot of stress and weight, though, its not indestructible. Injuries, wear-and-tear, and conditions like arthritis can cause inflammation and pain.

  • Hip fractures, usually caused by osteoporosis
  • Damage caused by wear-and-tear
  • Previous trauma to the joint
  • Damaged caused by an immune response
  • Inflammation of the bursae

Osteoarthritis and bursitis are the leading causes of hip pain. While surgery is an option in severe cases, many doctors recommend conservative treatments to start. These include:

  • Physical therapy
  • Lifestyle changes
