For situations like these, massage therapy will be ineffective because it doesnt address the underlying cause of the pain.

The question you probably have now is one I get asked all the time: If someone is at a high level of pain and you dont want to create more pain and inflammation, then what kind of bodywork do you apply that creates lasting change in pain and inflammation?

The answer: indirect applications, the techniques that seem to affect pain from a distance for what your client complains of.

I always tell my students to use the technique that works. That could be the Pain Patterns and Solutions techniques I teach, or it could mean several other tools in your massage toolbox. It all depends on how the client responds. The only way you will know which technique works is to check before-and-after pain levels. That is your undeniable proof.

When you decrease pain, you decrease inflammation. Then the body has more energy to heal itself. Watch for what takes pain from an eight to a four in that session, then from a seven to a three in the next session, then a six to a two, and so on.

Hitting The Right Spot

Would-be massage patients may confront a confusing roster of massage styles, ranging from Ayurvedic to shiatsu. But most massage styles fall into one of two broad categories: Swedish, involving long strokes of varying intensity levels, and deep tissue, which concentrates on kneading knots and trigger points in muscles and connective tissue .

    Lower back pain is the leading cause of job disability in the world. About one in ten people have it, and for many who develop back pain, the condition becomes chronic.

    Now, a new study finds that massage may provide lasting relief for chronic lower back pain, according to research published in the journal Pain Medicine.

    To see how people in the real world respond to massage, researchers looked at 104 people with persistent back pain who were referred by their doctors to licensed massage therapists. They went to 10 sessions over 12 weeks, and the practitioners were free to design massage programs that were individual to the patients, rather than all using the same technique.

    At the end of the study, most people completed a questionnaire, and more than 50% reported clinically meaningful improvement in their back pain.     Many of those improvements lasted. Three months later, with no further massage sessions, 75% of the people who reported initial improvement said they still felt better.
