What Do Massage Therapists Do

New York Times: Former Texans QB visited with more massage therapists than first reported

Massage therapists use their hands to manipulate and work a clients muscles and soft body tissues. There are many different types of massage therapies, called modalities, such as Swedish massage, reflexology, acupressure, sports massage, reiki, and neuromuscular massage. Most massage therapists specialize in several modalities, which require different techniques.

Massage therapy can offer medical benefits by helping to rehabilitate injuries and be part of a healing process by relieving pain, body aches, and soreness. It may also help reduce stress, increase relaxation, and aid in the general wellness of a client. Massage therapy that aims to improve physical health typically differs in duration and technique from massage that is intended to simply relax or rejuvenate clients. The training background of those who perform the two types of massage therapy may differ as well.

  • Provide a passing score from a written professional licensing examination given in English, such as the New York State Exam, MBLEx or NCETMB.

Options For Individuals Who Completed Shorter Programs

Although 1,000 hours of education and training will ultimately be required, massage therapy graduates may submit their license applications when they have completed as few as 500 hours. The Board will determine deficiencies. The individual will be able to correct the deficiencies by taking coursework through an acceptable program. The licensing agency will carry out another review later.

A massage therapy graduate also has the option of applying to a license-qualifying New York program and matriculating as an advanced student. This option, unlike the previous one, will result in the student earning a new diploma or certificate. An individual who chooses this option will have to complete more hours of education, however, as New York massage therapy schools will only accept 250 hours of transfer credit.

A student who took massage therapy coursework but did not complete a program will need to complete one to become license-eligible in New York. Again, up to 250 hours of credit may be awarded for prior study.

Individuals with questions about verifying education from non-approved programs may contact the Bureau of Comparative Education by telephone at 518-474-3817, ext. 300 or by email at comped at nysed.gov.

Continuing Education Requirements For Massage Therapists

    Massage Therapy Form 2

Continuing education requirements for massage therapists vary from state to state, but in general, a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education is required for licensure renewal. In many cases, massage therapists are required to take at least three courses each year in ethics, self-care, or other topics. While it is not always required, CEs should be obtained from a NCBTMB-approved provider.

Depending on the state, continuing education courses may also be completed online. The board of massage and bodywork therapy in Arizona requires that continuing education be completed within three years of the expiration of the license. Courses must be relevant to the scope of massage therapy and not solely for the purpose of increasing profits. Other approved courses include ethics, communication, and CPR. A full list of CE courses can be found on the boards website. You cannot carry over CE credits from one renewal period to the next.

Continuing education requirements for massage therapists are specific to each state. Massage therapists and technicians in Tennessee must complete 24 hours of CE each year. Two hours of CE must be in Tennessee law, two hours in massage therapy management, and two hours in ethics. Eight hours of the 24 required CE hours can be taken online, while the remaining hours must be completed in a hands-on classroom setting. Continuing education courses must be approved by the NCBTMB, AMTA, and Delaware Board of Massage and Bodywork.

    Out Of State Applicants

    Meet Sam Adams

Now for those that did not attend massage school in NYS, are currently licensed or practicing in another state or jurisdiction, and are looking to get a license by endorsement or experience.

This is where things get complicated.

You likely have seen the 1000 hour requirement and automatically assumed you do not qualify for a license. However, New York has a few other ways you may qualify.

Can you answer Yes to this?

    • I have passed a written examination that was required for massage therapy licensure in the jurisdiction where I am licensed which is satisfactory to the State Board for Massage Therapy and acceptable to the department, such as the NCETMB prior to February 2015 or the MBLEx.

AND Yes to ONE of the below?

    • I have practiced as a licensed massage therapist for the past 2-4 years and can document the equivalent of at least 2 years of post-licensure professional experience and 1,000 clock hours of education, as acceptable to the department.
    • I have practiced as a licensed massage therapist for the past 5 or more years and can document the equivalent of at least 5 years of post-licensure professional experience and 800 clock hours of education, as acceptable to the department.
    • Actually, you should just read over the section Applicants Licensed in Another Jurisdiction on the board website, because there are a few more options.

*One year of experience is defined as 52 weeks in which massage therapy is practiced an average of 12 hours each week.
