How Long Does It Take To Become A Counselor In California
If you are starting from scratch, the biggest factors influencing how long it takes to become a counselor in California will be your education and experience. You will have to complete a masters or another doctorate program that includes at least six practicum or field study units. This typically takes several years. Following this, you have to gain 3,000 hours of supervised experience spread out over at least two years.
From your undergraduate degree to your doctorate, you may spend as long as 10 years to become a licensed counselor. It can take less time than this, especially if you already have an undergraduate degree or relevant doctorate when you decide to become a counselor. But you cannot take any shortcuts with the practical experience requirements.
When confirming a therapist license, ensure that you are using the proper lookup as there are several other roles with therapist in the name that have their own lookups. For example, you will not find a physical therapist license California holder or an LPCC in a California massage license lookup.
A6 Records Of Treatment
Every person owning or operating a massage establishment under the provisions of this chapter shall maintain a record of the date and hour of each treatment, the name and address of the patron, the amount paid for the treatment including any gratuity, and the name of the massage therapist administering such treatment. Such records shall be completed in a legible manner, and shall be maintained on the premises of the massage establishment. Such records shall be open to inspection by officials charged with the enforcement of these provisions for the purpose of law enforcement and for no other purpose. The information furnished or secured as a result of any such inspection shall be confidential. Such records shall be maintained for a period of two years.
A23 Revocation Hearing Notice
No permit shall be revoked or suspended until after a hearing shall have been held before the city manager to determine just cause for such revocation or suspension. Notice of such hearing shall be given in writing and served at least ten days prior to the date of the hearing thereon. The notice shall state the grounds of the complaint against the holder of such permit, or against the business carried on by the permittee at the massage establishment, and shall state the time and place where such hearing will be held.
Such notice shall be served upon the permit holder by delivering such notice to such person, or by leaving such notice at the place of business or residence of the permit holder in the custody of a person of suitable age and discretion, or by mailing, postage fully prepaid, addressed to the permit holder at his place of business or residence at least ten days prior to the date of such hearing.

What Does Camtc Do
Before CAMTC was created, California massage professionals were often required to obtain a city/ county license or permit in every city they practiced. Mobile massage licenses could be pricey and complicated to keep straight. Or if a therapist worked in one city and got a job in a neighboring city, a new license was required.
CAMTC certification allows massage professionals to provide services anywhere in the State of California for one price, $150. There is no need to obtain multiple local permits.
Massage regulations exist to protect the public, since getting a massage by an untrained therapist can be potentially dangerous. Certified therapists must meet certain educational and examination requirements, as well as undergo background checks.
You can verify a certified massage therapist on CAMTCs website.
Protects the CMT title
CAMTC protects the professional title, Certified Massage Therapist , and Certified Massage Practitioner . Only CAMTC certified therapists can use this title in their advertising.
Whats the difference between a CMP and CMT?
Previously, there were two certification levels, Certified Massage Practitioners and Certified Massage Therapists. CMTs had more stringent requirements . Now, California only certifies CMTs.
Previously certified CMPs may only use the title CMP and can continue to recertify as a CMP, unless they pass the MBLEx and upgrade to CMT.
CAMTC does not:

Understanding Federal And State Massage Therapy License Laws
Regulations about massage therapy certification and licensure are often misunderstood.
Massage therapists aren’t subject to any national regulations when it comes to running this type of business. There isn’t a national licensing or certification program that would allow a single massage therapist to practice anywhere within the United States.
Many states have a massage therapy board that sets educational requirements, testing requirements, and issues licenses. So, it’s important to understand and follow the regulations that apply to massage therapists in the state or states where the therapist practices.
California Continuing Education Requirements
Please understand that massage laws change frequently and vary from state to state. We will try to provide you with the most current information possible.
It is our understanding that there are three levels of massage certification in California:
Currently, there are no continuing education requirements for renewal of the CMT or CMP certification.
Therapists holding a CCMP Certification need to complete a minimum of 30 hours of education each year. You may complete ALL 30 CE hours through our home study/online programs.
You can verify this information or ask further questions by contacting the California Massage Therapy Council at 916-669-5336 or visit their website at www.camtc.org.
Please note that all of our courses can be used for NCBTMB recertification, our approved provider number is 409296-00. You may also use any of our CE courses for renewal with organizations such as the AMTA and ABMP .

One: Choosing A School
In the state of California, massage therapists must complete training at a massage school. Finding the appropriate school for training depends on which discipline of massage therapy you are most interested in. The field of massage therapy offers 80 different disciplines, including Swedish massage, traditional European massage and contemporary Western massage, as well as Oriental massage including Shiatsu and Acupressure. Students of massage therapy can also choose to specialize in hydrotherapy, reflexology, deep tissue, sports massage, warm stone massage or become an independent contractor. There are currently over 1,500 massage therapy schools, colleges and post secondary schools throughout the United States that offer training. According to the American Massage Therapy Association , the number of massage therapists and the schools offering professional training, certification and/or licensing in massage therapy, will continue to rise dramatically over the next few years.

Can You Practice Massage Without A License

Failing to do so could result in fines or even jail time if they are convicted of performing massage without a license.

Complete A Background Check Via Live Scan
I have previously used Live Scan fingerprinting for one of my state massage licenses . Here are some tips:
- Your Live Scan print must be done in California. This differs from most other states fingerprinting requirements.
- You cannot re-use prints taken for previous licenses in other states.
- The cost of a fingerprinting and background check ranges from $60 to $100.
- Here is a list of approved California Live Scan provider locations.
- NOTE from CAMTC: Local Police and Sheriff stations may be more experienced in securing legible fingerprints from massage professionals with thin or worn ridges in the pattern area. When Florida enacted its fingerprinting requirement the above problem was a real struggle for massage therapists. Many had to complete their prints multiple times.
CAMTC applicants must complete and submit a Massage Therapist Request for Live Scan Service form.
The Live Scan service provider will fill out the section at the bottom of the page and keep the original.
It typically takes 72 hours for results to get to CAMTC from the DOJ.

Why Does It Matter
CMTCA promotes continuous quality improvement and best practices in massage therapy education through accreditation. The process is a mechanism for quality assurance and continuing quality improvement for entry-level massage therapy education programs in Canada.
Most professions, particularly in the health sector, have a national accreditation process for their education programs, to ensure that graduates entering the profession are qualified and competent.
Some of the well-established benefits of accreditation include:
Patients having access to a common national level of service provision
Practitioners having more mobility as their skills are recognized across the country
Students having access to objective, third-party information about the quality of a program
Education programs having more access to educational resources
CMTCAs rigorous standards and comprehensive accreditation process help education programs strengthen and improve the quality of the education they provide. Students of CMTCA-accredited programs can be confident that their training is helping them become qualified, competent, and caring health care professionals.
